3. Trump Vows to Rename the Gulf of Mexico “Gulf of America”
President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday said that he would move to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America,” adding that the name has a “beautiful ring to it.” Trump justified his logic by claiming that the United States “takes care of it” and that “it’s ours”. The Gulf of Mexico, though, is in fact named after Mexico, which itself derives its name from an ancient Aztec city called “Mēxihco.”
The body of water bordering this region naturally became known as the “Gulf of Mexico” after Spanish explorers encountered this city during their exploration of the region. Later, the name “Mexico” eventually came to encompass a broader region and ultimately the modern-day country.
But, can Trump actually do that? Well, maybe, but it’s not a decision solely placed in the hands of the United States. And at the end of the day, other countries wouldn’t have to refer to the oceanic region as such as there are instances where countries refer to the same body of water or landmark by different names.

5. Minneapolis City Council Approves Sweeping Police Reform
The Minneapolis City Council approved a sweeping agreement with the federal government to reform the city’s police department. This landmark decision comes in the wake of George Floyd’s murder in 2020 and aims to address systemic issues of racial bias, excessive force, and violations of civil rights within the department. The agreement mandates significant changes, including:
- Community oversight: Expanded role for civilian review boards in police operations and investigations.
- Enhanced officer training: Focus on de-escalation tactics, implicit bias awareness, and the sanctity of human life.
- Stricter use-of-force policies: Emphasizing the need for reasonable and necessary force, with greater scrutiny of officer actions.
- Increased accountability: Improved systems for investigating and disciplining officers who violate department policies.
